today I am going to teach you a little lesson because I know a lot of you are going to want to know this, especially if you are into making videos online. Today, I am going to teach you… how to survive on YouTube. Everyone ready? Here we go.
My first rule on how to survive on YouTube is never ever use your real name unless your real name sounds interesting enough to sell to an audience and you are not worried about repercussions such as losing your real world job or anything else along those lines. If your real name sounds interesting enough to use in videos, go for it. However, my best advice to you is if you’re going to do videos, the best thing to do is not to use your real name. If you have to, come up with a flashy username, like I did. I have been doing this whole YouTube thing for five years and I have always done everything under an assumed name for anonymity purposes. I’m not saying that you have to do this, but this is usually the best advice I can give people who are trying to make it on YouTube.
My second rule is simple: You’ve gotta have a plan if you’re planning to do YouTube. Whether you are planning to do random videos, topical videos or if you’re just planning on putting your whole life out there on video, you’ve gotta at least have a plan as to what you are going to do. Me, I kind of started small with photo montage videos before moving up to random videos and eventually doing my own web series. The reason why I started small was partly due to the limits of technology. In short, I didn’t have a video camera when I started. If you don’t have a video camcorder yet you do have access to photos, it’s okay to do photo slideshow videos for the time being. However, you’ve still got to have a plan or else you’re not going to last very long. Oh, and PS, every once in a while don’t be afraid to make random videos because of the age-old rule: Variety is the spice of life.
My third rule is that it’s not about getting famous or getting popular on YouTube. If you are only on YouTube just to get a huge number of subscribers or to get famous, people will know it and they probably will stop watching you and are very likely not to watch you again. So basically if you are doing videos do it because you want to and basically do it for yourself. If you enjoy what you do on YouTube or if you put a lot of work into your videos, people will take notice and if your videos interest them they will come back and watch any more new videos that you put out.
And there’s one more rule to follow: Don’t worry about the haters. Haters are nothing more than a bunch of do-nothing people who don’t do anything on their own and who exist only to try and tear down people who are actually doing creative things and putting themselves out there. If you don’t have a thick skin or learn to develop one, you probably will not survive on YouTube. If you let the haters get to you, they win. So it’s important to not let the haters get you down because there are people out there that will enjoy what you do.
And there you have it folks. This is just a little advice for all you future video makers from your friendly neighborhood Blackcatloner on how to survive in the online video making world. Hopefully you’ll take this advice to heart. Here endth the lesson. Now go out there and make some videos.
